GWR GRANGE CLASS 4‑6‑0 No. 6875 HINDFORD GRANGE
With the famous ‘wall’ at Penzance station providing a backdrop the crew of GWR Grange Class 4‑6‑0 No. 6875 Hindford Grange, seen here in immaculate external condition, relax on the footplate of their charge after arriving with a short train of milk tanks on 29th April 1962. Hindford Grange moved to Cardiff East Dock in September 1962. The end came in March 1964 from 82B St. Philip’s Marsh.

GWR 94XX CLASS 0‑6‑0PT No. 9433
Steam up at 83G Penzance on 29th April 1962. From left to right are GWR 94XX Class 0‑6‑0PT No. 9433 and GWR 45XX Class 2‑6‑2T No. 5508 whilst peeping out of the running shed is GWR County Class 4‑6‑0 No. 1001 County of Bucks. All three locomotives were on the books at 83G but this was soon to change with the closure of the depot to steam on the horizon. 9433 was the first to go, withdrawn in July 1962. Two months later 1001 was transferred to 87H and 5508 was posted to 81C Southall.

GWR GRANGE CLASS 4‑6‑0 No. 6812 CHESFORD GRANGE
A congested scene in the yard at the side of the running shed at 83G Penzance on 29th April 1962. Amongst the locos present is GWR Grange Class 4‑6‑0 No. 6812 Chesford Grange. Prior to the closure of the shed to steam on 8th September 1962, Chesford Grange moved ‘down the road’ to 83D Laira (Plymouth). Later transfers took No. 6812 to 81D Reading and 81F Oxford from where it ‘died’ in February 1965.

This shot taken of a side‑road immediately adjacent to the half‑roundhouse at 83E St. Blazey could, in essence, judging by the immaculate locomotives on view, have been taken in the 1950’s, but alas, this was not the case. The date is 29th April 1962 the day after steam traction ceased at the depot. Right to left are GWR 45XX Class 2‑6‑2T’s Nos. 5531 (83E), 4564 (83G Penzance) and tucked away almost out of sight is GWR 57XX Class 0‑6‑0PT No. 8737 (83E). Nos. 5508 and 8737 survived to ‘steam’ another day from other depots.

SR UNREBUILT BATTLE OF BRITAIN CLASS 4‑6‑2 No. 34084 253 SQUADRON
‘Hot Work’ at 83H Plymouth (Friary) on a sun‑filled and very warm afternoon of 29th April 1962. A dirt‑stained railwayman takes a break on his haunches watched by a member of the footplate crew of SR Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class 4‑6‑2 No. 34084 253 Squadron from 72A Exmouth Junction. Once the property of the Southern Region (72D) it became 83H when taken over by the Western Region on 23rd February 1958. Its doors closed completely on 5th May 1963.

GWR COUNTY CLASS 4‑6‑0 No. 1006 COUNTY OF CORNWALL
A splendid portrait of locally based GWR County Class 4‑6‑0 No. 1006 County of Cornwall seen here out of steam in the shed yard at 83D Laira (Plymouth) on 29th April 1962 in pristine condition. Transferred to 82C Swindon in December 1962 County of Cornwall suffered withdrawal in September 1963 and after a lengthy period of storage was eventually cut up at Cooper’s Metals, Sharpness Docks in late 1964.
