BR Class 9F 2‑10‑0 No. 92233
Dominating this busy scene in the yard at 12A Carlisle (Kingmoor) on this bitterly cold day is BR Class 9F 2‑10‑0 No. 92233, just one of many examples based at Kingmoor at this stage in time. Twelve months on and the depot would be devoid of live steam with the rails rusting rapidly. How the once mighty became fallen in less than twelve months.

LMS Class 3F 0‑6‑0T No. 47471
Steam to the rescue. Although withdrawn the previous month, due to the intense cold LMS Class 3F 0‑6‑0T No. 47471 had been resurrected as the shed pilot and is seen here scuttling along snowy tracks at Kingmoor fulfilling duties that were obviously beyond the capabilities of an 0‑6‑0 diesel shunter due to the extreme weather conditions.

The condemned lie still and cold amidst the snow at 12B Carlisle (Upperby). A duet of LMS Class 2 2‑6‑2T’s Nos. 41264 and 41285 await their inevitable fate after withdrawal in December 1966, though both were destined to be cut up in different scrapyards in Scotland: 41264 at McWilliam’s, Shettleston and 41285 at Motherwell Machinery & Scrap, Wishaw.

A lone railwayman braves the freezing conditions in the shed yard at 12E Tebay and more than likely cannot wait to return to the warm footplate of LMS Class 4 2‑6‑4T No. 42236 as it awaits its next banking turn up Shap. Once of 66D Greenock, No. 42236 was transferred to the LMR in February 1960 at 6A Chester. Condemnation came in May 1967 from 56F Low Moor.

Blizzard conditions at a snow‑swept Hellifield station where begrimed BR Class 9F 2‑10‑0 No. 92208 darkens the sky as it prepares to head north over the Settle & Carlisle to its home base at 12A Carlisle (Kingmoor) with ballast hoppers. Note the ancient brazier adjacent to the tender of No. 92208 blazing away in an effort to prevent the water column icing up.

Author’s Note: Of the fifty‑nine ‘live’ locomotives many were in steam including the influx of ‘foreigners.’ On the occasion of my next visit in early July the depot was closed and there was an air of desolation. Gone were the visitors of 7th January and in their place were fifty‑six condemned locomotives – all cold and rusting. On the human side, how many loco crews and support staff lost their livelihoods at this one depot alone – such was progress?
