LMS: Class 5 4‑6‑0 No. 44713 (10D Lostock Hall) on a parcels train to Barrow and Workington.

LMS CLASS 5 4‑6‑0 No. 44713
The ‘old order’ at Carnforth, soon to be swept away for many a year. LMS Class 5 4‑6‑0 No. 44713, from 10D Lostock Hall, heads west with a short parcels train bound for Barrow/Workington on a wet 22nd June 1968. No. 44713 survived until the end of steam, leaving Lostock Hall, a depot it had been allocated to since June 1967, for Draper’s scrapyard on 10th March 1969.

LMS CLASS 5 4‑6‑0 No. 44874
Steam to spare beneath the coaling plant at 10A Carnforth on 22nd June 1968. Pride of place goes to LMS Class 5 4‑6‑0 No. 44874 a resident of Carnforth MPD since August 1961. Accompanying No. 44874 is sister locomotive No. 45025, a relative newcomer to the books at Carnforth in April 1966. These locos shared entirely different fates: 44874 cut up by Draper’s – 45025 preserved on the Strathspey Railway.

LMS CLASS 5 4‑6‑0’s Nos. 45156 and 45287
Patricroft MPD consisted of two straight running sheds at right angles to one another and in its heyday was a hive of steam activity, but by 22nd June 1968, one week before closure, it was a shadow of its former self with few ‘live’ steam engines on show. Two exceptions were LMS Class 5 4‑6‑0’s Nos. 45156, with painted nameplates – Ayrshire Yeomanry – and 45287. Both lived on for a few short weeks at 10F Rose Grove.

LMS CLASS 5 4‑6‑0 Nos. 45200 and 45096
With only one week to go before the end of steam at 9D Newton Heath the heavens have opened as though in sympathy for this final curtain. Photographed on 22nd June 1968 are a trio of LMS Class 5 4‑6‑0’s. From left to right are: 45200 (9D), 45096, from 10F Rose Grove (stencilled on the buffer‑beam), and 44949 (9D). The latter died upon closure of Newton Heath, but 45096 and 45200 lingered on briefly at Carnforth and Rose Grove.
