GWR 2884 Class 2-8-0 No. 3863
GWR 2884 Class 2‑8‑0 N0 3863, allocated to 82E Bristol Barrow Road, peeps out from a number of assorted buildings at 85B Gloucester (Horton Road) on 1st August 1965. Despite being side‑lined on a back road No 3863 was to live on for almost another three months at 82E becoming one of the last members […]
A duet of GWR 4700 Class 2‑8‑0’s
A duet of GWR 4700 Class 2‑8‑0’s are seen in tandem in the yard of their home depot at 81C Southall on 28th April 1963. Both were transferred to 81A Old Oak Common during the latter part of 1963 from where they eked out their final days. Accompanying them at 81C is GWR 9400 Class […]

U Class 2-6-0 No 31792
Unlike Tangmere, U Class 2‑6‑0 No 31792, also seen at 72C (its home shed) on the same date, was unable to avoid the inevitable after condemnation in September 1964, but was it at the hands of Bird’s, Bynea or Bird’s, Morriston?
GWR 2800 Class 2-8-0 No 2859
GWR 2800 Class 2‑8‑0 No 2859, of 88A Cardiff East Dock, darkens the skyline at Barnt Green on a sunny 17th September 1964 as it speeds southbound with a lengthy Class 8 loose‑coupled mineral train. This loco had the dubious distinction of being the last to be overhauled at the now long‑defunct Wolverhampton Works.
The Last of the line – Shunting Horse called Charlie
Although we had Charlie and his master Mr. Lawrence Kelly a year or two ago, we venture to show them again in memory of the great work done by horses over 150 years for the railways of Great Britain. First in their construction, also shunting, but above all, the carting on the streets of our […]
Solihull Station Comparison
The next two photographs featured, this time at Solihull, have been taken from a near identical standpoint. The black and white photograph includes semaphore signalling and the tracks to platforms 3 and 4 were still fully employed as GWR Castle Class 4‑6‑0 No. 7012 Barry Castle approached platform 2 at high speed with the Pines […]
Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 No 34067 Tangmere
Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class 4‑6‑2 No 34067 Tangmere, from 70E Salisbury, pictured at 72C Yeovil on 23rd June 1963, was destined to escape the clutches of the scrapmen. Withdrawn in November 1963 it spent many years rotting away at Barry before being rescued in 1984. Photograph by Peter Hands
Tales from Chasing Steam – BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN – EAST GERMANY – 14th & 15th JUNE 1979
Prior to West German steam finishing around 1975/1976 to take photographs of locomotives in East Germany would, at the very least, entailed one’s film being ripped out of the camera. However, once steam had gone from the DB the East German authorities, having a proliferation of steam locomotives on the DR (Deutsche Reichbahn), realised the […]
GWR Hall Class 4-6-0 No. 4936 Kinlet Hall Leaving Snow Hill
A flurry of white smoke covers Birmingham (Snow Hill) on 30th December 2000 as GWR Hall Class 4‑6‑0 No. 4936 Kinlet Hall arrives with the outward leg of The South Wales Borderer. Withdrawn on 15th January 1964, 4936 was sold to Woodham’s, Barry, being rescued from there on 7th May 1981. Photograph by Peter Hands
