A4 Class 4‑6‑2’s 60001 Sir Ronald Matthews
Photographs of A4 Class 4‑6‑2’s allocated to 52A Gateshead are quite rare in comparision to sister locomotives based at the more the illustrious depots of 34A Kings Cross and 64B Haymarket. One such elusive beast, 60001 Sir Ronald Matthews, is captured on film out of steam in the shed yard at 50A York on a gloomy and cold 26th October 1963. Condemned in October 1964, 60001 spent some time in store at both 52A and 52B Heaton before being despatched for cutting up two months later.

A3 Class 4‑6‑2 60077 The White Knight
Equipped with German‑style smoke deflectors A3 Class 4‑6‑2 60077 The White Knight, of 56B Ardsley and in light steam, is in a grimy condition in the yard at 36A Doncaster on 12th May 1963. For many years an inmate of 52B Heaton, 60077 then had spells at 55A Leeds (Holbeck) and 56C Copley Hill before moving to Ardsley in September 1961. One final move in July 1963 took it ‘north of the border’, to 64A St. Margarets (Edinburgh), remaining in service until July 1964.

A1 Class 4‑6‑2 No. 60120 Kittiwake has had its ‘wings clipped’ as it forlornly stands, still in steam, in the yard of its home depot at 50A York on 18th January 1964 following a front end collision a few hours earlier. Kittiwake, a once longstanding locomotive on the books at 56C Copley Hill, was withdrawn from York two days after this photograph was taken and after the humiliation of being hauled to Darlington Works was soon reduced to a pile of scrap metal.

A2 Class 4‑6‑2 60525 A.H. Peppercorn
With safety valves lifting, the railwayman, who is conversing with the driver of A2 Class 4‑6‑2 60525 A.H. Peppercorn at Aberdeen station, is probably having to shout to make himself heard over the din prior to the departure of this express bound for Glasgow (Buchanan Street) on 22nd August 1962. 60525, for many years based at 61B Aberdeen (Ferryhill), was rendered surplus to requirements in March 1963 and cut up at its birthplace, Doncaster Works.

Thanks to the unearthing of a plethora of fresh information contained within the pages of railway publications and sightings from correspondents since my WHTS website came on stream a few years ago the knowledge gleaned from both sources has placed me in a situation whereby I can provide the reader with much improved data with reference to storage locations/dates than I was initially able to provide in my 1980’s series of WHTS booklets.
The author hopes that this streamlining will add to the enjoyment of the existing chronological sequence of events appertaining to WHAT HAPPENED TO STEAM – Volume Four.

Note: According to Richard Strange (Steam World 6.1999) No. 60538 was transferred to 52B Heaton on 22.5.50. This is incorrect: according to the National Archive Records at Kew (AN 7/129) the correct transfer date was 22.5.60.
There are no known additional amendments or queries with regards to the disposals of the LNER A4, A3, A1 and A2 Classes of locomotives, but any information to the contrary will be welcomed along with any confirmations or otherwise of the verifications required.
Note: Locomotives scrapped at Darlington were either cut up at the Works or at the scrapyard which was separate. Unless otherwise specified I have placed them under the general heading of Darlington Works.
Note: Draper’s, Hull: Up until the week beginning 20.11.67 locomotives were cut up in Sculcoates yard. After this date cutting was carried out in new premises in Neptune Street.
All cut up dates recorded are the week commencing.
