Schools Class 4‑4‑0 30925 Cheltenham & LMS Class 4 2‑6‑4T 42281 at 14D Neasden
A small crocodile of young spotters, from the Railway Enthusiasts Club in Birmingham, on a visit to the London sheds, walk between Schools Class 4‑4‑0 30925 Cheltenham and locally based LMS Class 4 2‑6‑4T 42281 at 14D Neasden on 20th May 1962 a few short weeks before total closure. Cheltenham, now in preservation, of 70D Basingstoke, was temporarily allocated to Neasden for the purpose of hauling RCTS specials over the former Great Central Railway.

West Country Class 4‑6‑2 34094 Mortehoe (70A Nine Elms)
A ‘stranger‑in‑the‑camp’ at 36A Doncaster on 12th May 1963. Unrebuilt West Country Class 4‑6‑2 34094 Mortehoe (70A Nine Elms),sporting a self‑explanatory headboard, poses for the camera in the depot yard. The special had originated from Birmingham (New Street) and in addition to 36A the depots at 17A Derby, 41F Mexborough and 41E Staveley (Barrow Hill), along with Derby and Doncaster Works were also visited.

Battle of Britain Class 4‑6‑2 34090 Sir Eustace Missenden
Safety valves lifting, Rebuilt Battle of Britain Class 4‑6‑2 34090 Sir Eustace Missenden, Southern Railway, also from Nine Elms, awaits its next turn of duty in the yard at 71G Weymouth on 23rd June 1963. Accompanying 34090 is Rebuilt West Country Class 4‑6‑2 34017 Ilfracombe, yet another Nine Elms steed, which had the dubious distinction of being one of the last members of the Bullied light pacifics to be cut up, in late 1968, at Buttigieg’s, Newport.

Battle of Britain Class 4‑6‑2 No. 34084 253 Squadron
SR Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class 4‑6‑2 No. 34084 253 Squadron still has its nameplates and crests in situ at 70G Weymouth on 22nd May 1966 despite being withdrawn from service at 70D Eastleigh several months earlier. One wonders if the plates and crests were still attached when 253 Squadron reached its final resting place at Buttigieg’s, Newport!

Completing this quartet of Nine Elms locomotives is Rebuilt Merchant Navy Class 4‑6‑2 35014 Nederland Line seen here on a centre road at Exeter (Central) on 23rd June 1963 after attaching itself to the empty stock of a Sunday afternoon express bound for Waterloo in which the author travelled in to Yeovil Junction after earlier arriving at Central station in the opposite direction, again from Yeovil Junction, behind sister engine 35025 Brocklebank Line (72A Exmouth Junction).

There are no known additional amendments or queries with regards to the disposals of the SR Schools, West Country/Battle of Britain and Merchant Navy Classes of locomotives, but any information to the contrary will be welcomed along with any confirmations or otherwise of the verifications required.
Author’s Note: Discrepancies between the monthly withdrawal dates as published in the 1982 reprint edition of WHTS Volume Five and the updated versions online are negligible.
Note: Thanks to the unearthing of a plethora of fresh information contained within the pages of railway publications and sightings from correspondents since my WHTS website came on stream a few years ago the knowledge gleaned from both sources has placed me in a situation whereby I can provide the reader with much improved data with reference to storage locations/dates than I was initially able to provide in my 1980’s series of WHTS booklets.
I hope that this streamlining will add to the enjoyment of the existing chronological sequence of events appertaining to WHAT HAPPENED TO STEAM – Volume Five.
